Hi everyone! 🙋 Today I’m doing the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag. 👏 I saw this tag floating around on the site quite a long while ago. I hope I didn’t get into this boat too late. I was tagged by Windowsill Book to do this almost a month ago, and I’m more than happy to oblige. I’m so sorry I hadn’t done it immediately. As you (probably) know I’ve just made my come back here for almost a week now. I don’t plan to disappear in the near future, so I need to get creative with my posts. 😎
This tag is pretty challenging. I don’t have a lot of unpopular book opinions. I mostly like books that the majority of readers like too. However, I’m still gonna give this a try. Let’s get on with the tag! 💃
A Popular Book/Series You Did Not Like 📚
I think I have quite a few of this, both for series and standalone(s). I’ll start with popular series I didn’t like. The first one is Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I really liked the first book in the series. I think the world building was interesting although the whole concept was similar to the Hunger Games. However, the second and the third book (Glass Sword and King’s Cage) were really bad for my liking. I didn’t like Mare as much as I liked her before. A lot of things that happened in the book I think were being dragged on for too long unnecessarily. I was so ready for the series to end in the third book, and I got really upset when it ended with a cliffhanger instead. 😤 I won’t say that I’m not gonna read the final book because I will. I like Cal and Maven too much to give up the last book.
The second one is Passenger by Alexandra Bracken. I listened to the audio-book and I got drifted away many times. Sometimes I got disoriented with the events that were progressing. I didn’t really connect with the characters. I ain’t gonna give it another try nor am I going to continue on with the series.
The third one is Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. I read it like two years ago. I honestly don’t remember much, just some itsy bitsy details. What I do remember clearly is that there was one guy named Warner, and I didn’t like the female and male MCs. Similar with Passenger I’m not going to finish this series as well. I heard that there will be the TV show version of the series. Maybe I’ll like the show more than the books.
One of the popular standalone I didn’t like is The Upside of Unrequited. The main MC Molly is so whiny. All she does is feeling bad for herself for not being beautiful enough to catch any guys’ attentions. Yet she claims herself as feminist. She’s relevant, but she isn’t clever.
A Popular Book/Series That is Hated but You Love 📚
This is the hardest one to answer. I don’t think I can name any. I’m just going to mention one book that a lot of my friends despise, but I don’t. The book also has quite a high rating on Goodreads. That book is I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios. I didn’t really think much of the issues that were raised in the book. I really enjoyed reading it. Then my friends started to talk me how problematic the book was. I didn’t really take what they told me seriously because I’m afraid I’ll end up not liking the book too.
A Hate-able OTP 💔
Rowan & Aelin from Throne of Glass series.
To be honest I don’t like that the ‘ship’ changes in every book, and I mostly don’t like Rowan and Aelin together. They were supposed to only be best-friends. I think this is my biggest problem with all of Sarah J. Maas’ books. The MC never sticks to the same love interest. Frankly I lost my interest for this series because of this frequent change in OTP and because the conflicts are getting bigger and bigger and more complicated and nowhere near solved. I’m not going to give up the series just because I lost my appetite. I’d be more disappointed if I stop because I’ve managed to pull through until the fifth book. I didn’t want that to go all away.
A Popular Genre You Hardly Reach For 📚
My most favorite genres are young adult, contemporary, and fantasy. I would hardly reach for classics, mystery, and thriller. I won’t be reading them if I can help it.
A Beloved Character You Do Not Like 🙅
I have two names for this. They are Adam from The Raven Cycle and Mark from The Dark Artifices. I liked Adam at first, but then got really frustrated when he was being stubborn and difficult. Also to me, Mark was more naive than innocent. I know I should put into account of what they have endured in their lives, but I just couldn’t care less about them.
A Popular Author You Cannot Get Into 🤷
I have two names for this as well.
The first one is Rainbow Rowell
I have read Eleanor & Park. I didn’t find it amazing. It was so-so. I also read Fangirl, but didn’t finish it. I don’t know why, but I don’t find any of her books interesting.
The second one is John Green
I have read three of his books, and every time I felt stupid especially for Looking for Alaska. I begin to doubt myself when I read his books. It’s like ‘am I too dumb to understand what John is trying to say?’. Despite that, I’m not going to quit him. I will read his upcoming new book.
A Popular Bookish Trope You’re Tired of Seeing 💑
I don’t like it when best friends become lovers. Or when one of them has unrequited love towards the other, then it turns out to be a love triangle.
A Popular Book You Have No Interest in Reading 📚
I think I’m not going to read anything by Rainbow Rowell for the rest of my life.
A Movie/T.V Show that is Better than the Book 🎬
Hmm I haven’t read a lot of books that got adopted into movies or TV series. It’s either I read the book but didn’t watch the movie or TV series or vice versa. The only one that I could think of is Paper Town. It’s much enjoyable to watch the visual when you don’t really get the book. Although the movie didn’t make as much sense as the book, at least I’m looking at clear images.
There you have it! I know I said I didn’t have many unpopular book opinions, but I ended up mentioning more than one in some categories. You should know that I didn’t precisely dump them into my ‘absolut hate’ level. They were more like in between didn’t like and like. I’m sorry if you find that I dislike some of your favorite books on the list above. That’s just my opinion. I believe we’re all well aware that we shouldn’t force someone to love or to hate the same books as we do. 😉
I’m not going to tag any particular someone to do this. If you are interested, feel free to do one on your blog. 👍 Share me the link once you’re finished. Or if there are any of you who have done this, you can also share me the link to your post. I’d love to read yours.
That is all from me today. Thank you for reading. I’ll see you soon! 😘
